Graça Machel Secondary School is located in the district of Massingir, in Gaza, is the only secondary school that can take students after they graduate from the 7th Class so a big percentage of the students from the administrative posts of Massingir Sede, Mavodze and Zulo, have to walk more than 60km a day to get to school.
Graça Machel Secondary School created the project “Stop Delays and Win Health” – to increase students attendance therefore improving their performance, with the objective of supporting students who travel long distances on foot to go to school.
Most of these students, depend on transport or hitchhiking by people of good will, and when they have no other option they walk long distances, which makes them often arrive late for classes and miss school, thus negatively affecting their performance academic.
Sometimes when students take public transport, they spend between 50 to 100 meticais per day, which is high and their families can´t support it, since they themselves are struggling with a low income living from only on agriculture as a livelihood.
By having a bicycle, it will allow students to arrive at school earlier, improve attendance and consequently academic performance, help their families on the field, in the search for water and in saving them with regard to the value of transportation.
At the same time, the school will feel that it is contributing to the fulfilment of one of the challenges of the Millennium, that of reducing global warming, because the bicycle is a means of transport that does not pollute the environment.
It is intended to raise 50 bicycles for ESGM students, as a way to improve their daily commute and have better school results.
