The administrative post of Anchilo is located in the district of Nampula City, about 15 kilometers from the city of Nampula. Although it is located along the EN1 national road leading to the Northern Development Corridor, this is a markedly rural area and most people live on what the land produces, growing their fields (type of garden), as in overwhelming majority of rural communities in northern Mozambique. Here, access to water is also done through artesian wells and seasonal water lines; the dwellings are also of precarious construction, mostly constructed with roofs of grass and walls of blocks of clay; and outside the school Portuguese also does not exist, dominating the local language – Macua. The existing Anchilo High School in this community is the great opportunity for young people from all administrative positions and neighboring communities to dream of a more organized and solid future. For the 2019 school year, the school is expected to receive between 900 and 1100 students enrolled in three shifts – morning, afternoon and evening. This school has about 50 teachers who teach between grades 8 and 12. At the moment there are nine classrooms built in masonry, an administrative block and a library, all with zinc sheet cover.
The intervention of the community in school life is done through the School Council, an organ in which the Education Officers are represented and which plays a fundamental role in the mobilization of the community and its awareness of the issues of Education.
This school benefits from the Helpo partner’s Senior Future program, which awards scholarships to students. These scholarships include the amount of tuition, uniform and school supplies. With this campaign we will complement the scholarship of 40 young students of the Secondary School of Anchilo with the support of a bicycle. Coming into secondary school is a great challenge for these young people, but with this help, the motivation will be stronger and the better future will be closer.
